Notes
- In 1972 and 1974, only Canada and the Soviet Union played in the Summit Series.
- In 1977, the IIHF World Championships finally allowed professional players, but this series typically occurs during the Stanley Cup playoffs, so many NHL players can not attend.
- In 1996, the Canada Cup was replaced by the World Cup of Hockey.
- In 1998, NHL players were given the opportunity to play in the Olympics for the first time.
