Western Force is the new team to play in the Super 14 Rugby Union competition. It is the fourth Australian team to be accepted into the competition. The name was selected from a list of hundreds and was chosen to reflect power and solidity. Rugby WA said the name, "represents the natural elements that have shaped Western Australia -- the waves, the heat and the wind -- and the resources that have underpinned its economic strength."
The Force will be based in Perth, Western Australia, which is geographically closer for South African players and cuts usual travel time considerably. The teams colours will be Blue and Gold and the teams logo resembles the states emblem, the Black Swan. They are coached by former New Zealand All Blacks coach, John Mitchell and will start playing in 2006.
Players who have signed contracts so far include;
- Brendan Cannon
- Nathan Sharpe
