Vitória Sport Clube is a Portuguese football club based in the city
of Guimarães, located 40 km north of Oporto.
It is reported to be established in 1922.
Although Vitória de Guimarães (the club abbreviation used in Portugal) never managed to
win the championship or even the Portuguese cup, it is one of the most
respected clubs in Portugal, playing in the last decades always at the top
division, most of the times seeking for the places that grant access to the UEFA competitions.
Clubs such as Parma AC, Atletico Madrid and Sparta Prague were eliminated
from european competitions in ties with Guimarães.
In the last two years, Vitória struggled to keep itself at the Portuguese top division (Superliga). Those years were marked by the decline of the leadership of Pimenta Machado, former president of the club. Pimenta Machado is currently being judged on processes related to embezzlement.
In 2004, a new leadership began with Vítor Magalhães (former President of Moreirense ).
Vitória Sport Clube plays at D. Afonso Henriques Stadium , host of the Euro 2004.
