Visokoi Island (56º42´S 027º12´W) is 7.2 km (4.5 mi) long and 4.8 km (3 mi) wide, capped by Mount Hudson , a volcanic peak (915 m), in the South Sandwich Islands. Discovered in 1819 by a Russian expedition under Bellingshausen, who named the island Visokoi (high) because of its conspicuous height.
