United States Army Air Service

The United States Army Air Service was a forerunner of the United States Air Force. It was established in 1917 on the US entry to World War I based on the Aviation section of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. It in turn was replaced in 1926 by the United States Army Air Corps.

In 1924 it sent four planes and eight pilots on the first round the world flight. Two planes completed the trip and all the pilots survived.
