The United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company was part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system in New Jersey, including their main line to New York City (now Amtrak's Northeast Corridor).
History
The United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company (always leased and operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad) was formed on May 18, 1872 by a consolidation of the New Jersey Railroad, Delaware and Raritan Canal and Camden and Amboy Railroad. For early history, see those three articles.
At consolidation, the UNJ acquired leases on the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad and Rocky Hill Railroad . The line from Monmouth Junction to Jamesburg was bought from the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad on July 29, 1874.
The Belvidere Delaware Railroad was leased to the UNJ on January 1, 1876.
A July 16, 1879 agreement leased the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad to the UNJ from June 1, 1879.
A June 26, 1889 agreement leased the Perth Amboy and Woodbridge Railroad to the UNJ from January 1, 1891.
The Millstone and New Brunswick Railroad was bought on April 21, 1915 at foreclosure.
Two branches in Kearny were acquired, Meadows Branch being built 1917-1918 by the UNJ and Meadows Branch No. 2 being bought October 15, 1917 from Newark Factory Sites, Inc.
