U.S. Highway 278

U.S. Highway 278 is a spur of U.S. Highway 78. It currently runs for 1,074 miles (1,728km) from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to Wickes, Arkansas at U.S. Highway 59. It passes through the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas. It goes through the cities of Augusta, Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia, Gadsden, Alabama, and Tupelo, Mississippi.

Georgia

In Atlanta, it is known as North Avenue. Outside the Perimiter, it is briefly the Covington Highway. At Lithonia, Georgia, at the intersection with Georgia Highway 124, it merges with Interstate 20 for 15 miles. It again breaks at Covington, Georgia. US 278 is co-signed with a state route in its entire Georgia route, as are all U.S. highways in the state. From the Alabama line into Atlanta, it is cosigned with Georgia Highway 6. At Atlanta, Georgia Highway 10 runs with 278. At Avondale Estates, Georgia, Georgia Highway 12 is paired with 278, all the way into Thomson, Georgia. There, it merges with US 78/GA 10 to the South Carolina line.

Mississippi

Until early 2005, US 278 was only signed in Mississippi from the Alabama state line to US 45 west of Amory, Mississippi.[1]
