Thornton is a city located in Adams County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 82,384.

Geography

Thornton is located at 39°54'11" North, 104°57'16" West (39.903043, -104.954406).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.4 km² (27.2 mi²). 69.6 km² (26.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Thornton is a suburb north of Denver, CO, on the east side of I-25. By 2025, it will contain most of the North Metro Corridor in Denver's FasTracks commuter rail network.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 82,384 people, 28,882 households, and 21,517 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,184.2/km² (3,066.7/mi²). There are 29,573 housing units at an average density of 425.1/km² (1,100.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.71% White, 1.46% African American, 1.12% Native American, 2.50% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 8.96% from other races, and 3.14% from two or more races. 21.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,882 households out of which 42.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 18.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.25.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 36.0% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 5.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $54,445, and the median income for a family is $58,742. Males have a median income of $40,098 versus $29,982 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,471. 5.2% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
