The State is the daily newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina, which is distributed in most of the 46 counties within South Carolina.

The newspaper was first published on February 18, 1891.

Its news staff was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in general news reporting for its Hurricane Hugo coverage in 1989. Its cartoonist, Robert Ariail , was a Pulitzer finalist in 1995 and 2000.

Other milestones

• 1903: The paper's founding editor, N.G. Gonzales, was fatally shot by James H. Tillman , lieutenant governor and nephew of Benjamin Tillman. Tillman was acquitted of murder charges.
• 1945: The State buys its rival, the Columbia Record.
• 1986: Knight Ridder buys The State-Record Co. and six subsidiaries for $311 million.
