Swami Rama Tirtha

Swami Rama Tirtha (स्‍वामी रामतीर्थ) (1873-1906) was one of the greatest spiritual figures of modern India. A direct descendant of Tulasi Das , he was a brilliant student, especially in mathematics. After completing his degree, he served for a while as Professor of Mathematics in the Forman Christian College . It was at this stage that his spiritual life began to blossom. He began to read the Gita and became a devotee of Lord Krishna.

Rama Tirtha took Sannyas a few days before the passing of Swami Vivekananda. Swami Rama's burning desire to spread the message of Vedanta made him leave the shores of India for Japan. He went with his disciple Swami Narayana . Next he spent a year and a half in San Francisco under the hospitality of Dr. Albert Hiller . He gained a large following and started many societies, one of them being the Hermetic Brotherhood , dedicated to the study of Vedanta.

On his return to India, Swami Rama continued to lecture in the plains, but his health began to break down. He died when he was only thirty-three.
