The company has been brewing beer since August 17, 1988, but the history of Sleeman beer goes back to 1834 when John H. Sleeman established himself as a brewer and malter. The company's current products are based on the family's original recipes.

Sleeman Breweries is the largest Canadian owned and operated brewery. The current chairman and CEO of Sleeman Breweries is John Sleeman, and the COO of the company, is Rick Knudson.

On July 22, 2004, Sleeman purchased Quebec based Unibroue microbrewery, expanding the Sleeman line to include the La Fin du Monde and Maudite beers.
