Sangatte

Sangatte is a small (population ~5000) harbour town on the northern coast of France, bordering the English Channel. The name comes from an adaptation of Sandgate, which is a town in the UK, some 20 miles away. Sangatte became famous essentially because of the works for the Channel Tunnel, it also achieved notoriety as the location of a controvertial refugee camp.
