São Bernardo do Campo (Portuguese for Saint Bernard + field) is a municipality in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The population in 2003 is 745,161, the density is 1,835.37/km² the area is 406 km². It is known as a core part of the ABC region (A = Santo André, B = São Bernardo do Campo, C = São Caetano do Sul, D = Diadema - cities in southern Brazil which cover an area of 20 km²). The city is accessed by the transit system of ETCSBC (pronunciationL eh-teh-seh-ehsee-beh-seh) and EMTU (eh-emmy-tee-oo) (Emprese Metropolitnaa de Transporte Urbano , lit. the Metropolitan Urban Transit)
The area are made up of metallurgical industries boomed in the 1960s and president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva worked in the 1970s. The nickname was the Capital of Automobile (Portuguese: a Capital do Automóvel). It is probably similar to Motown in Detroit and Los Angeles but the production is probably not as much? The automobile was the primary industry of the suburban São Paulo city . Most of the plants toay have moved to other parts of the state and outside the state of São Paulo. The automobile industry remains important and is recognized.
History
The city was founded by João Ramalho in 1553 and was known as Vila de Santo André da Borda do Campo. It became a parish in 1812 and became a municipality in 1890. In 1938, it became a part of Santo André district and in 1945, it split.
