Rural Free Delivery

Rural Free Delivery was and still is the means by which the United States Postal Service delivers mail directly to residents in areas defined as "rural" at no cost to them (The money is supplied by the USPS). Prior to this there was no free postal delivery to rural regions in the United States of America, delivery was defined as extra service and required payment from the receivers.
