Rice-Eccles Stadium

Rice-Eccles Stadium is the premier stadium of the Intermountain region serving the six state area of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado and Nevada. By playing host to a variety of events such as the EA Sports Supercross, various concerts including U2 and The Rolling Stones, soccer matches and of course football games, Rice-Eccles Stadium has provided entertainment to fans of all interests and ages.

First and foremost the stadium is home of the University of Utah Division I football team, as well as the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies. It is located on the beautiful University of Utah campus in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains. From an east bench elevation of 4,657 ft, the Stadium overlooks downtown Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake. It is located 30 minutes directly east of the Salt Lake International Airport. Airport #2 is also approximately 30 minutes away and can be used for private aircraft and charters.

The stadium underwent a fifty-million-dollar renovation beginning May 1997 and was completed September 1998. It was financed by private donations, bonds, and the Salt Lake Olympic Committee . It is now one of the most beautiful and modern stadiums in the U.S.

Rice-Eccles Stadium will be the initial home of the Major League Soccer expansion franchise Real Salt Lake beginning in 2005.

Stadium Bowl Information

1. Capacity of Rice-Eccles Stadium is 45,634 with outstanding site lines for sporting events & concerts. "It's a stadium with an Arena Feel" - SFX Entertainment.

2. The playing field consists of a synthetic infill system which simulates natural grass. Field Turf looks, feels and plays like natural grass. The field has a minimal crown of eleven inches (28 cm) and an extensive underground drainage/air flow system.

3. Staging for Concerts is generally set up in the south end zone. Previous major concerts include: Rolling Stones, U2, Beach Boys and Chicago.

4. Field lighting was constructed to provide superior lighting for Olympic Ceremonies. Average foot candles at field level is 150 / vertical illumination 125 / horizontal illumination with restrike time of approximately 10-12 minutes.
