The Red River War was a series of conflicts in the Texas panhandle occurring in 1874-1875 between Comanche, Kiowa, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes of Native Americans and the United States Army and settlers. The conflict erupted following the U.S. defaulting on terms of the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867.
Comache bands commanded by Chief Quanah Parker, as well as Kiowa, Cheyenne, Sioux, and Arapaho raided European settlements. They were eventually defeated at Palo Duro Canyon. The Comanche and the Kiowa were granted reservation land in southwestern Indian Territory.
