Rafael Solis (boxer)

Rafael Solis (born approx. 1959) is a former boxer from Puerto Rico. Raised at Caimito, a San Juan barrio that is actually much closer to the center of the city of Caguas than it is to that of San Juan, Rafael used to train at the Caimito Gym, but he also frequented the Bairoa Gym.

Rafael Solis is the brother of former world bantamweight champion Julian Solis and of Enrique Solis, who once unsuccessfully challenged Eusebio Pedroza for the world Featherweight title.

Rafael Solis had a successful boxing career, fighting in many Latin American countries, such as Venezuela, Dominican Republic and others. In 1981, he conquered the Fecarbox Jr. Lightweight belt. On November 18, 1983, he challenged Hector Camacho for the WBC's world Jr. Lightweight title. In what was the second time two Puerto Rican fighters fought each other for a world title (the first time was Benitez vs. Santos in 1981), Solis lost to Camacho by knockout in round five at Roberto Clemente Coliseum.

Solis went on boxing, with mixed success. He would never again fight for the world title. Nowadays, he performs at boxing exhibitions alongside brother Julian.
