Phitsanulok is a town in northern Thailand, capital of the Phitsanulok province.Phitsanulok is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, founded about 600 years ago, and was the birthplace of King Naresuan. As the cross-road between the northern and central regions of the country, it has long been an important city both for political and strategic reasons. It was a capital of Thailand for 25 years during the reign of King Boromtrailokkanat of Ayutthaya.
Its main tourist attraction is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, also known as Wat Yai, this famous temple built in 1357 is home to Phra Buddha Chinnarat which is regarded as one of the most beautiful Buddha images in Thailand. The city is a good staging post for a visit to the World Heritage site at Sukothai.
