Philip Norman Bredesen, Jr.

Philip Norman Bredesen, Jr., the current 48th governor of Tennessee, was born on November 21, 1943 in Ocean Park, New Jersey. His parents are Philip Norman Bredesen, Sr., and Norma Walborn Bredesen. He and his wife, Andrea Conte, have one son named Ben. He was also the mayor of Nashville in 1991-1999. He previously ran for governor of TN in 1994 but lost to Don Sundquist. One year later, in 1995, he ran for mayor of Nashville again and won. During his time as mayor, some of his best accomplishments were placing 440 new teachers in schools, founding 32 new schools, and repairing 43 previously existing schools. Bredesen also put 200 new police officers out on the streets of Nashville. This act helped to dramatically decrease crime rate in Nashville, which had been historically high in the early 1990's. He also implemented a domestic violence prevention program that would become a national role model for similar programs.
