Chief Executive Officer, Scottish Rugby Union - appointed February 2004 after several years of successful marketing within the SRU.
His nickname is "Firework Phil" because he has provided lavish firework displays and entertainment before rugby games at Murrayfield, the home of the Scottish Rugby Union. These were criticised by Sir Clive Woodward as a distraction from international games with England, and by Matt Dawson as a waste of the SRU's money after the Calcutta Cup game in Edinburgh in 2004, but Anderton is unrepentant on both counts.
A business background was helping him to bring the SRU back to financial solvency, until he resigned as CEO in January 2005 after David Mackay (Chairman of the SRU) was forced to resign by the SRU General Committee.
