Province of Pennsylvania

(Redirected from Pennsylvania Colony)

The Province of Pennsylvania, better known to Americans as Pennsylvania Colony, was a North America colony granted to William Penn in 1681 by King Charles II of England. It was also sometimes called the Quaker Province because of the founder's religion, the Society of Friends, better known as the "Quakers."

One of the Middle Colonies, it later joined the United States as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was a proprietary colony.

The historic Mason-Dixon line was drawn in 1763, while Pennsylvania and the neighboring Province of Maryland were still colonies.

The three counties of the Delaware Colony were originally part of the Province of Pennsylvania.
