Peggy Feltmate

Peggy Feltmate is an Ottawa city councillor, she represents the Kanata part of the city. She was born in Wallaceburg, Ontario in 1949 and was first elected in the 2003 Ottawa election to replace outgoing Alex Munter . She had won plaudits for her management of the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre and was backed by Munter and most other local leaders. Her main opponent was Richard Rutkowski and the central issue of the race was the registering of several domain names that Feltmate could have used for her site. Rutkowski claimed his campaign manager had done it, and fired him, but the campaign manager stated that he had been acting under the direct orders of Rutkowski.

Feltmate won in a massive landslide, winning almost triple to the votes of Rutkowski. On office she quickly ran into difficulties with her election pledge not to raise taxes. Facing a significant budget shortfall the city council was forced to raise taxes considerably. She was more successful in her effort to save some of the area around Beaver Pond from development.
