Paul Scoon

Sir Paul Scoon (b. 1935) was Governor General of Grenada for 14 years, from 1978 to 1992.

When Maurice Bishop overthrew Prime Minister Eric Gairy in 1979, Scoon was arrested by the new Marxist government. He was later released and Bishop and Scoon managed to maintain a semi-normal working relationship, despite the fact that Scoon strongly disliked Bishop's unorthodox government. When Bishop was in turn deposed, Scoon was once again imprisoned, this time by Bernard Coard's radical forces.

Operation Urgent Fury was launched by US forces in 1983 and deposed the radical government. Though constitutionally able to assume full power during this leadership vaccuum, Scoon instead appointed Nicholas Brathwaite as acting head of government until post-invasion elections could be held.

He retired from his post in 1992.

Sir Paul has since published a book entitled "Survival for Service" that documents and provides a personal account of his experiences as Governor General of Grenada.
