Patrick Air Force Base is a United States Air Force facililty located between Cocoa Beach, FL and Satellite Beach, FL. The station is part of the activites of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and home to the 45th Space Wing : it was once also home to the 71st Rescue Squadron . Florida State Highway A1A also runs through the base: it was shutdown for several months after the September_11,_2001_attacks to install security upgrades, causing 10-15 mile detours for local residents. The base is also only several feet above sea level, and is susceptible to hurricanes. In the mid 2000s, talk began of closing the base as part of the Base_Realignment_and_Closure effort.
