Australian Overland Telegraph Line

The Australian Overland Telegraph Line was completed in 1872 linking Australia with the rest of the world. The construction of the telegraph line was initiated by Charles Todd and the Government of South Australia in 1870. In two years 3200 km of cable were laid between Adelaide and Darwin, and many consider it be be one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century.
