Oni Press

Oni Press is a small press comic book publisher founded in 1997. Its founders coined the term "real mainstream" to describe its output. Traditionally, superhero titles were considered "mainstream" American comics. Outside the comic book market, just about every other genre is considered "mainstream". Therefore, "real mainstream" simply meant that Oni Press intended to publish comic books and graphic novels whose genres were more in line with the kinds of books found in average book stores. The company name, which derives from a name of a particularly destructive demon from Japanese folklore, helps to emphasize the publisher's "odd" nature.

Oni Press has only one consistently published title - Queen and Country. The other "regular titles" are published in four-six issue installments on more or less annual bases. For the most part, Oni Press avoids publishing superhero titles unless they approach the concept from an unusual angle.
