Obergefreiter is rank of the German military which dates from the 19th century.
Translated as "Senior Corporal", the rank is normally bestowed upon soldiers who have command over small squads or for those who have held the rank of Gefreiter and have performed a feat of achievement.
The modern day rank of Obergefreiter is more of a junior Sergeant position. In contrast, the World War II rank of Obergreiter was considered equivalent to a Lance Corporal.
Obergefreiter is considered junior to the rank of Unteroffizier.
