Nur Muhammad Taraki (1913? - 1979) was an Afghan political figure amateur poet, and publicly-notorious revolutionary. He served as the head of state of Afghanistan from 1978 until he was overthrown in 1979, and assassinated by being smothered with a pillow by unknown assailants, presumably from rival factions in the then-ruling People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan.
