Norrtälje is a city in Stockholm County situated in the easten part of central Sweden. It is the chief town of the Norrtälje municipality that covers an area of 1999.6 km². Norrtälje municipality is located in an area called Roslagen. The total population of the Norrtälje municipality is 54 021 of which 27 142 are male and 26 879 are female. The town Norrtälje has 16 258 inhabitants. The population density of the community is 26 inhabitants per km².
A lot of the houses in Norrtälje municipality are summer cottages, only inhabited during summertime. That is due to the geographical position near the archipelago which makes it a popular tourist area.
In 1719 large parts of the central town that was built in wood was burnt down by Russian plunderers.
