Nonsan is a city in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea.
History
Nonsan was established by combining four small towns(-gun), Yeonsan , Eunjin , Noseong , Seoksung , in 1914. Nonsan is often called Nolmoi , which means yellow mountain.
Mahan was located on the district during Samhan period. In Baekjeperiod, the district belonged to Whangdeungyasan-gun which included Yoeryasan-hyeon and Jinaksan-hyeon and Deokgeun-gun which included Gajinae-hyeon. Later in the Silla period, it was divided into two different towns with the new names; Deogeun and Hwangsan. Also, Yoerya-Mt., Jinak-Mt., and Gajinae were renamed each Ni-Mt., Seok-Mt., and Sijin.
In Goryeo period the following cities were renamed: Hwangsan to Yeonsan; Deogeun to the same name but different meaning; Seoksanhyeon to Soeksoenghyeon. Sijin-hyeon merged into Deogeun gun in the 6th year of the King Taejo in Joseon Period. And, Deogeun-gun was renamed as Eunjin-hyeon in the first year of the King Sejong. In the 13th year of the King Teajong, Yeonsan-gun was changed to Yeonsan-hyeon. Nisan-hyeon was renamed Niseong-hyeon in the King Youngjo Peroid. And, Seokseong-hyeon was renamed Noseong-hyeon in the King Jeongjo Period. In 1912, four hyeons were changed to four guns.
