Newell's Old Boys

Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys is a popular football team from Argentina, founded in 1903. Its home is in the neighborhood of Parque Independencia, in Rosario, and it plays at the Estadio "Coloso" (The Collosum). The club's nickname is Los Dragones (The Dragons) or Los Leprosos (The Lepers). It was named by ex-pupils of the English High School of Rosario, in homage to its director and football coach, English immigrant Isaac Newell . Newell's Old Boys has an historic rivalry with Rosario Central, the other club from Rosario.

The team colors are black and red, from the flags of Great Britain and Germany (Isaac Newell being British and his wife German).

Newell's Old Boys have won the Argentine Championship six times (Metropolitano 1974, 1987/88, Apertura 1990, 1990/91, Clausura 1992 and Apertura 2004), the Argentine Liguilla (1992), the Argentine Cup (1939, 1941, 1972, 1999) and was the Sub-Champion of the Copa Libertadores de America twice (1988 and 1992). Also, Newell's won a mini-tournament called Little World Cup in 1988, against River Plate, Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester United, and is, together with Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo de Almagro and Racing Club de Avellaneda, the only club that made a long and succesfull tour all over Europe (on 1941), on which defeated several important teams, like Valencia, Borussia, Real Madrid and the Spain National "A" Team.

Newell's Old Boys is the argentine club that has won the most times the Rosario League (42), the Reserva tournaments (16), the Inferiores Young National Tournaments (78), the Latinoamerican U-17 Championships (5) and the Youth World Cups F.I.F.A. aka Nike Cup (1).

Newell's Old Boys also is the only team of the world that has all its players on the National Team, when it represented Argentina in a Pre-Olympic Tournament with his non-defeated Reserva Team. It classified third all over America, after Brasil and Uruguay.

Newell's Old Boys is the argentine club that has contributed the most players to the Argentina national team, and the one that has exported the larger amount of players to Europe's top leagues, mostly to Italy and Spain. Among its great players: Gabriel Batistuta, Balbo, Jorge Valdano , Gallego, Zanabria, Dezotti, Sensini, Samuel, Pochetino, Pontoni, Martino, Perucca and several more.

The classical matchs (derbies) that Newell's Old Boys' people remember the most are the following: 1907: Newell's 16 - Rosario Central 0 (Maximum Local League Score) 1974: Newell's Old Boys defeated Rosario Central and became Argentine Champion in the Stadium of Rosario Central. 1991: Newell's 8 - Rosario Central 0 (Maximum A.F.A. Derby Score)

Its president and manager is Eduardo J. López and its coach is former player Arsenio Ribeca (following the resignation of Américo Rubén Gallego after obtaining the 2004 Apertura title).

Stadium

Newell's Old Boys plays in the Parque Independencia Stadium in Independencia neighborhood, Rosario.

The stadium is known as El Coloso. The official capacity of the stadium is 52,000 but crowds of 60,000 have been accommodated. It was cronstucted by its president Eduardo J. López and baptized with a match against the National Team (Newell's 3 vs. Argentina 2).

The Coloso was a venue of the 2001 World Cup ) and the Odesur Games on 1988.
