New York Stars

The New York Stars were a 1974 team in the World Football League, a failed attempt to create a second major U.S. professional football league in competition with the established National Football League.

The team was originally envisioned as the Boston Bulls, but soon a change of name and venue to the "New York Stars" was announced. The team played its few New York games in Dowling Stadium, a former venue located on an island in the East River. The Stars organization began to flounder almost immediately and after only a few games, despite the desire by the league to have a presence in the largest U.S. media market, announced a move to Charlotte, North Carolina for the balance of the 1974 season. The team returned for the abbreviated 1975 campaign as the Charlotte Hornets , totally unrelated other than by name to the later National Basketball Association team of that name which is now the New Orleans Hornets, and lasted until the league ceased operations in the midst of the 1975 season.
