New Jersey State Highways

Every road maintained by the New Jersey Department of Transportation or a toll authority is given a number. In addition, NJDOT has assigned a system of three-digit county-maintained routes beginning with 5 in a cross-state network, called New Jersey 500-Series County Highways or New Jersey State Secondary Highways.

The occasional highway or section of highway is locally maintained, but most State Highways are maintained by the state.

History

Until January 1, 1953, every section of U.S. Highway had a signed State Highway number assigned to it. Many roads were renumbered in the 1953 New Jersey State Highway renumbering.
