Nelson, British Columbia

Nelson (49n30, 117w17 PST) is a Canadian city of approximately 10,000 people in the province of British Columbia. Known as 'The Queen City', Nelson is located in the Selkirk mountains on the shore of Kootenay Lake. Following the discovery of silver in 1886, the town grew quickly, leading to incorporation in 1897. By 1906 a streetcar system was installed, and the local forestry and mining industries were well established.

Modern Nelson retains a large number of Victorian heritage buildings. It is the seat of the Regional District of Central Kootenay. Nelson is home to Whitewater Ski Resort and the microbrewery, Nelson Brewing Company. Nelson was also the filming location for the Steve Martin movie Roxanne, (1987)
