Muar District

(Redirected from Muar)

Muar is a 2,346.12 sq.km district of Johor, bordering Malacca on the west coast of Malaysia. The name originated from the word 'Muara' or estuary in Malay. The other possible origin is possible from Indian influence which comes from two words; ‘Muna’ and ‘Ar’. ‘Muna’ means three and ‘Ar’ means river, denoting the three rivers flowing through Muar, 'Sungai Muar', 'Sungai Serting' and 'Sungai Pahang'.

History

Muar is the Royal city of Johor and also known as 'Bandar Maharani', a name given by Sultan Abu Bakar in 1884.

Muar played a role in resisting Portugese occupation of Malacca. In response to attacks from Portugese fleet, the Bentayan fort was built to repel seaborne invasions.
