Mid Sweden University

The Mid Sweden University or Mittuniversitetet is a Swedish university with three main campuses, in Östersund, Sundsvall, Härnösand, and a minor branch in Örnsköldsvik.

The institution started out as Mid Sweden University College, formed July 1, 1993 as the result of a merger between the University College of Sundsvall/Härnösand and the University College of Östersund. The two university colleges had been founded in the early 1970s, along with a number of similar ones in different regions of Sweden. July 1, 1995, the Sundsvall/Örnsköldsvik and Sundsvall Colleges of Health Sciences were also incorporated. Effective from January 1, 2005, the government of Sweden granted the institution the right to call itself a university.

As of 2005, the university has approximately 13,000 students, around half of them based in Östersund, 4,500 in Sundsvall, 3,000 in Härnösand and 300 in Örnsköldsvik. Education and research are organized in two faculties, the Faculty of Human Sciences and the Faculty of Technology and Natural Sciences.
