The Macross Missile Massacre is a term most used by anime fans to refer to an attack where a mecha or spaceship attacks by launching a huge swarm of missiles. In some cases, this can be more missiles than the craft should physically be able to hold.
The term comes from the anime The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, where the attack was commonly used by fightercraft and other ground mecha. It is also abbreviated to 3M.
Missiles used in a Macross Missile Massacre are normally smaller than normal missiles, often called Mini-Missiles or Micro-Missiles. They also tend to be very manueverable, flying in twisting and crisscrossing paths to strike the target from several angles.
This term was not used in the dialogue of the series itself, although this style of animation has been nicknamed within the Japanese animation industry as "Itano Circus." Ichiroh Itano was the animation director largely responsible for these scenes in the first Macross series, the Do You Remember Love? film, Macross Plus, and the Daicon convention opening videos.
Some fans have also referred to it as Scott Bernarding, after the main character of the Third Generation(Genesis Climber Mospeada) of Robotech, who often performed the 3M, even though ammunition such as missiles was supposed to be scarce.
