This club has won The Danish championship two times (1983 and 1992) and The Danish Cup three times (1984, 1985 and 1990). In December 2001 the club went bankrupt and were relegated to amateur league Danmarksserien , just below the three Danish pro leagues . In 2003 they were promoted to Division 2 (the third best league), as winner of Danmarksserien.

Swedish international Marcus Allbäck also played for the club in the late 1990s. Four then Lyngby players were on the Danish team that won the 1992 European Football Championship.

As of 2004 the club's Old Boys team is among the best in Denmark featuring well known players such as Michael Laudrup, Brian Laudrup and aforementioned Berggren and Larsen.
