In the English-speaking nations, the term low-pressure cell is used in place of the word cyclone. A cyclone or low-pressure cell is defined as having winds that blow in a closed circulation, that is, in a complete circular motion.

Tropical storms, extratropical cyclones, subpolar cyclones, and subarctic cyclones are called low-pressure cells in English-speaking nations such as the United States and Canada.

Small storms that have winds that blow in a circular fashion are not called low-pressure cells. Tornadoes, waterspouts, and dust devils that raise dust or churn fallen leaves are not called low-pressure cells.
