Liverpool Central station is a railway station in Liverpool, England, the central hub of the Merseyrail service. The station was opened at the end of the Cheshire Lines Committee line to Manchester. In 1891 an extension from James Street station was added, providing access to the Wirral via the Mersey Railway Tunnel.

In 1977, with the closure of Liverpool Exchange station, a new loop line was created by linking Moorfields to Liverpool Lime Street and onto Liverpool Central, connecting with the established James Street connection. Another new tunnel took Northern Line traffic from Exchange through to Moorfields and on to Central station. This provided a through connection to Manchester from the rest of the Merseyrail network - now discontinued, services terminate at Hunts Cross station. At the same time, works to allow connection to the Victoria Tunnel were put in place, but were abandoned.

Liverpool Central is one of six stations on the Merseyrail network to incorporate automatic ticket barriers.
