The NATO reporting name of each missile is shown in parentheses behind the proper name. AA = Air-to-Air; SA = Surface-to-Air (i.e., SAMs); SS = Surface-to-Surface; SA-N = Surface-to-Air, Naval; SS-N = Surface-to-Surface, Naval (i.e., ship/submarine-launched missiles).

United States

Unified D.S.

D.S. = Designation System (the particular letter triplet + number code system used in front of the missile name). The Unified D.S. includes missiles from all three military services: Army, Navy, and Air Force.

First letter of triplet:

  • A = launch from air
  • B = TBD
  • C = stored in "coffin" (horizontal container), raised to a vertical position and then fueled for launch
  • F = shoulder-launched missile weapon
  • G - Runway or ground
  • H - stored in missile silo, but launched from the surface
  • L = launch from missile silo
  • M = ground launched, mobile
  • P = launch from soft pad (fixed, unprotected surface location)
  • R = launch from surface ship
  • U = launch from submarine

Second letter of triplet:

  • D = decoy drone
  • G = surface attack
  • I = interception (air or space)
  • Q = target drone
  • U = underwater attack

Last letter of triplet:

  • M = missile
