Lee Kim Lai

Lee Kim Lai (1960-25 April 1978) was a police national serviceman of the Singapore Police Force who was abducted and murdered at the age of 18 by Ong Chin Hock , Yeo Ching Boon and Ong Hwee Kuan , all aged 20 in Singapore on 25 April 1978.

The second oldest child in a family of 5 siblings, Lee was attached to the Police Reserve Unit 1 for his national service liability at Mount Vernon . At 2 am in the early morning hours of 25 April 1978, Lee took over the hourly sentry duty from Koh Kah Kway. Soon after, he spotted a Yellow Top taxi approaching the gate. The front seat passenger, Yeo, alighted and came up to the gate, asking Lee for help to carry Ong Hwee Kuan from the backseat of the taxi. Lee, not sensing anything amiss, oliged, left his post, and proceeded to the rear door of the taxi.

When Lee opened the back door however, Ong Hwee Kuan, who was pretending to be drunk, grapped Lee and pulled him into the taxi, while Yeo, who was following behind Lee, helped to push the struggling policeman in. Yeo got back into the front passenger seat, and hurried the driver, Ong Chin Hock, to drive of as he realised someone has spotted them from within the base.

As the taxi speeded away along Upper Aljunied Road , Ong Hwee Kuan stabbed Lee repeatedly in the neck and upper body with a knife. Yeo, impatient with Ong Hwee Kuan's progress, turned around from his front seat and stabbed Lee a few more times in the neck. Lee's service revolver and his spare rounds of ammunition were removed. The taxi was abandoned at Geylang Bahru , with the policeman's body left in a pool of blood on the rear seat while the three men tried to make their escape.

The three men were quickly arrested with the help of an alert detective, constable Siew Man Seng , who happened to be at the scene. They were subsequently tried, found gulty, and sentenced to death for the murder of Lee Kim Lai and the taxi driver, Chew Theng Hin .
