Geography

Kaipara District is located in the low hills around the northern shores of the Kaipara Harbour, a large natural harbour open to the Tasman Sea.

The roughly triangular district stretches from a thinning of the North Auckland Peninsula south of Maungaturoto in the southeast to the Waipoua Forest in the northwest, extending from there down the west coast to the Kaipara Harbour. The region is bisected by the Wairoa River and its tributaries, which flow into the nortern end of the Kaipara Harbour.

Population

The district consists of the towns of Dargaville, Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka , as well as the rural area which surrounds them. It has a population of 17,811, of whom about 4500 live in Dargaville, the seat of the district council.

The population is largely rural, living in small settlements dotted around the undulating countryside. The area around Dargaville is noted for the high proportion of residents of Dalmatian descent.

The nearest city is Whangarei, 45 kilometres northeast of Dargaville.

Dargaville has an annual Arts and Crafts Festival run by the local Rotary club.
