John S. Battle

John S. Battle (1890-1972) was a Democratic Governor of Virginia, served 1950-1954. Formerly State Senator from Charlottesville. His chief achievement was to provide unrestricted state funding for public schools. He was later appointed by President Eisenhower to U.S. Civil Rights Commission .

John S. Battle High School in Washington County, Virginia, built in 1959, bears his name.
