John Calhoun Phillips

John Calhoun Phillips (1870-1943) was the 5th governor of the state of Arizona. He served between 1929-1931.

Calling himself the "ugliest man in Arizona", Phillips was a construction worker in his early life and helped to build the state capitol building that he was later going to occupy as governor. During his governorship, he refused to raise the salary for the state judges for political reasons. Phillips died in 1943 from a heart attack while fishing.
