Jens Lehmann

Jens Lehmann (born November 10 1969 in Essen) is a German football goalkeeper, who currently plays for Arsenal F.C..

Lehmann started his career in 1989 with Schalke 04, playing for them for nearly a decade. He was the club's hero in their 1997 UEFA Cup final victory over Internazionale, saving an Ivan Zamorano penalty in a penalty shoot-out. He left them for a brief stint with A.C. Milan in 1998, but the move was a disaster, Lehmann made numerous mistakes and played only five matches for the club before being dropped. He then went back to Germany and Borussia Dortmund, winning the German championship in 2001-2002. Lehmann joined Arsenal on July 25 2003. In 2003-2004, his first season for Arsenal, he won the Premier League without a single loss.

Lehmann has a confident, aggressive style of play, often coming out of his goal to intercept passes; however this, coupled with his lack of ability in the air, has led to some costly high-profile mistakes when playing for Arsenal, such as their 2004 Champions League quarter-final loss to Chelsea. By the end of 2004, Lehmann was no longer automatic first-choice at the London club, with Manuel Almunia being selected for some matches instead.

As of the end of 2004, Lehmann has 20 caps for the German national team. Lehmann has a well-publicised bitter rivalry with fellow German national goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.
