Jayendra Saraswathi

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal (born July 18, 1935 as Subramanyam Mahadeva Iyer) is the 69th Acharya (guru of the Kanchi matha).

He became the Shankaracharya of Kanchi and was given the title Jayendra Saraswathi on March 22, 1954.

He was involved in talks related to the resolution of the Ram Janmabhoomi controversy. He has played an acive role in social reforms.

On November 11, 2004, he was accused by the government of Tamil Nadu state of instigating the murder a temple manager, and arrested. On January 10, 2005, the Supreme Court of India ruled that he should be released on bail. The court also criticised the Tamil Nadu police for failing to gather evidence against him. He was freed the next day after providing bail to a district court.
