Jan Swafford

American composer, musicologist, and author, teaches at Tufts University and author of respected musical biographies of Charles Ives and Johannes Brahms. His music, which is highly lyrical and moves freely between tonality and atonality, could be classified as New Romantic in style. Especially notable are his orchestral works After Spring Rain (1981-82) and Late August (1992), and his 1989 piano quartet They Who Hunger. He is currently at work on a biography of Ludwig van Beethoven.
