Jackie Milburn

Jackie Milburn (born May 11, 1924 in Ashington, Northumberland; died October 9, 1988), also known to fans as "Wor Jackie", was a football (soccer) player. He was a hero on Tyneside, playing 395 games for Newcastle United, but became a legend to followers of Protestant Linfield F.C. when he arrived as player/manager at Windsor Park . He scored 238 goals in 492 games in the 1950s. Later went on to manage Ipswich Town, before returning to Tyneside to become a sports journalist for the News of the World newspaper.

There is a statute of the footballer on the main street in Ashington, his home town, funds for which were raised by the Civic Head, Cllr Michael George Ferrigon during his term of Office.
