Jabiru Aircraft Jabiru

This article is about the plane. For the stork see Jabiru.

The Jabiru company produce a range of small civil utility aircraft designed and manufactured in Bundaberg, Australia. They also design and manufacture a range of engines, specifically designed for light aircraft use. The aircraft are available as kit and ready-built versions. Types include Microlight (Ultralight or ULM), commonly called the Calypso and light aircraft of up to four (but typically two) seats.

The aircraft are are built largely of composite materials and are conventional high-wing monoplanes with typically tricycle undercarriage, although taildragger versions are available as well. The wings can be removed for ease of storage or transportation.

Careful use of modern composite techniques has resulted in strong, sleek and curvaceous structures which are clean and light. The aircraft are designed around the pilot and passengers, being spacious and comfortable for touring, yet with a small footprint and frontal profile. All controls fall easily to hand and include a centrally mounted control column, brake and trim lever.

All engines are direct drive and are fitted with alternators, silencers, vacuum pump drives and dual ignition systems as standard. Over 2000 4-cylinder engines and over 750 of the 6-cylinder engines have been produced. The basic design is now so mature that only minor design changes have been made in the last 1000 engines or so.

Engines available are:

  • 2200 cc 4-cylinder 85 bhp (64 kW) @ 3300 rpm weighing 60 kg spec sheet
  • 3300 cc 6-cylinder 120 bhp (89 kW) @ 3300 rpm weighing 81 kg spec sheet
